At Northridge Family Dental, we always make every attempt to treat your teeth and remedy any dental problems. Unfortunately, in some cases damage to teeth is so advanced that it may be necessary to extract the tooth in order to maintain dental health.
If a tooth is broken, cracked, or extensively decayed, it may be necessary to remove it. Likewise, a tooth that is associated with advanced stages of periodontal disease, as well as teeth that are poorly positioned or non-functional, should be removed.
Oral surgery or general dental procedures offered by Advara Dental & Dentures:
When a tooth is badly infected and nothing can be done to save it, an extraction becomes inevitable. The removal of a tooth could prove to be quite a complex procedure based on its condition and the reason for the extraction.
A simple extraction
According to Dr. Hoyos, and most other dentists the term ‘simple’ does not indicate that the extraction is easy and that it can be performed by just anyone. The term mainly indicates that the procedure would be less complicated than a surgical extraction. The procedure isn’t very time consuming and is carried out under anesthesia since it is quite painful.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that have emerged and can be seen clearly, by the naked eye. It cannot be performed on a tooth that is hidden in the gum. An instrument called an elevator is used to lift the tooth slightly and then, using forceps, the tooth is moved from side to side, until it comes out.
A surgical extraction
A surgical extraction is a complicated process since the procedure is done on a tooth that hasn’t erupted as yet. In most cases, the tooth is difficult to access since it is not clearly visible to the eye. The procedure is always done under anesthesia and is definitely more time consuming than a simple extraction.
Sometimes, teeth break into bits before they erupt completely and a surgical extraction is needed to remove what’s left of the tooth. Surgical extractions are also performed to prevent the growth of impacted teeth that could prove to be very painful, if left untreated. Most surgical extractions involve the wisdom teeth as they are known for their ability to cause a lot of discomfort.
At the time of extraction the doctor will need to numb your tooth, jawbone, and gums that surround the area with a local anesthetic.
During the extraction process you will feel a lot of pressure. This is from the process of firmly rocking the tooth in order to widen the socket for removal.
You feel the pressure without pain as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves stopping the transference of pain, yet the nerves that transmit pressure are not profoundly affected.
If you do feel pain at any time during the extraction, please let us know right away.
Some teeth require sectioning. This is a very common procedure done when a tooth is so firmly anchored in its socket or the root is curved and the socket can’t expand enough to remove it. The doctor simply cuts the tooth into sections then removes each section one at a time.
